Now if you’d like to take the time, we’d like to tell you how this shit-show began On a warm summer evening in the year of our Lord 2015, a young college drop out is in his backyard, guitar in hands scribbling lazily on a loose sheet of paper. He taps his pen on his chin intensely, contemplating the first and only line that reads: “I’m going down”. he stares down at his pathetic excuse for an opening line and calls it a night. “eh, I’ll try again tomorrow” he says. This is his mantra. He didn’t know it then, but that pathetic little line would be the birthplace of a little band called Mustard Service and that pathetic little line would be the opening line of a little album called Zest Pop. For the next two years Marco Rivero and Armando Baeza (producer and former drummer) wrote and recorded the debut album “Zest Pop”, bringing in their friends Gabriel Marinuchi (guitar), Augusti Di Catarina (bass, backing vocals), and Leo Cattani (keys) to play the songs live as a full band. they played a few push-moshing, beer-spilling, gear-breaking, cop-calling, arrested-getting shows throughout Miami-Dade County, managing to amass a small yet passionate fanbase in their home town. In those years, GarageBand™ transitioned into ProTools™, recordings evolved into mastered tracks, and small house shows turned into packed venues. Their Debut album was released in June of 2017, relying solely on live shows and streaming platform algorithms for promotion and exposure. The algorithm gods took pity on these poor fools and granted them a world-wide audience over the span of the next three years, leading into the release of their sophomore album titled “Ces’t La Vie” in March of 2020. The fast-tempo and loud punk energy of his songs meshes with a more effects-driven guitar sound to create an atmospheric and exciting listening experience. The duo, who blur the lines between eloquent songcraft and instrumental fluidity, channel a spirit of unbridled freedom on their forthcoming debut album. On the 8-songcollection, mixed by Jason Cupp [Maps and Atlases, American Football, Milk Carton Kids, Good Old War], Tim contributes drums, percussion, synths, and keyboards, while Brian holds down guitar, bass, synths and keyboards, with both sharing lyrical and vocal duties. Brian and Tim first began playing music together during middle school in the Philly suburbs, experimenting, improvising, and exploring sounds at a formative age together. After high school, life carried the musicians down separate roads. Tim co-founded Good Old War, releasing four full-length albums and four EPs in addition to touring nationally, while Brian stayed local performing in various bands. In 2017, the two reconnected and launched a Primus cover band, Los Bastardos, and by 2019 had started collaborating on original music. SHINERShiner formed in 1992 and soon found themselves signed to DeSoto Records, (owned by Jawbox’s Kim Coletta and Bill Barbot). The band began a creative high and a busy touring schedule that endured for years, with their final album in 2001 The Egg a critical success. Pitchfork said, “Shiner’s six-string bloodletting beats the crap out of anything you’ll hear on commercial FM these days” and All Music noted, “The songs themselves bask in an epic splendor, replete with the kind of arrangements that reward repeat listenings” Along the way countless tours of the US, Europe and Japan, and 4 full-length albums gave them a fiercely loyal set of diehards. Comparisons with their contemporaries of HUM, Jawbox, Failure, and Swervedriver were unavoidable, but Shiner carved a path of their own with a dedication to song-craft and musicianship wrapped in darkly sugared hooks. Shiner broke up in 2002 but 10-years later re-released The Egg on vinyl and played sold-out shows in New York, LA, KC and Chicago. Those were some of their biggest shows ever and many in the audience were new to the Shiner fanclub. In 2018 the 4 of them – drummer Jason Gerken, bass player Paul Malinowski and guitarists Allen Epley and Josh Newton decided they were not quite finished, there was another life for Shiner they could not ignore. After a few recording sessions that took place over a year and a half, the band have emerged with 8 solid songs that make up Schadenfreude. The LP was self-produced, engineered, and mixed at Malinowski’ own Massive Sound studio in Shawnee, KS. “We’ve always been extremely hands-on, even when working with someone else technically ‘producing,’” says Newton, “with The Egg we ended up remixing and adding things to almost half the record on our own.
