Over the next decade, the Japanese duo went on to create the epic Luv(sic) Hexalogy, a 6-part saga dedicated to the goddess of music. Part2 was recorded in the aftermath of 9/11, while Part3 was an ode recorded during the vast commercialization of the hip hop industry. Then the untimely passing of Jun Seba aka Nujabes in February of 2010 led Shing02 to record and release parts 4-6 with the help of Uyama Hiroto, who was Nujabes’ go-to guy for live arrangements. Now, teamed up with the dynamic Manchester-based OMA, and Shing02’s trusted turntable maestro SPIN MASTER A-1, the Luv(sic) Hexalogy will come to life on stage sans samples and full of live textures that the audiences of Nujabes tributes in the past have come accustomed to. SubstantialPrince George’s County, Maryland-born MC, producer, artist, and educator, Substantial, debuted in 2000 collaborating with the late Japanese producer Nujabes, who later worked on the popular show Samurai Champloo. Legendary rapper and activist, Chuck D of Public Enemy referred to Substantial as “One of the great MCs of our time.” His soulful and introspective brand of Hip Hop music has received critical acclaim from Ebony.com, The Source Magazine, HipHopDX, DJBooth.net, and Okayplayer.com. His music videos have appeared on MTV, VH1, and BET. Substantial has performed in 20 countries and has collaborated with artists such as Kool Herc, L Universe aka Verbal (M-Flo), Oddisee, Mega Ran and more. His music has featured in films and television shows such as Kevin Hart’s Laugh at My Pain and Daytime Emmy nominated show Tough Love. He has also written and performed original songs for games such as Arknights, PUBG Mobile, and Mobile Legends Bang Bang. Founded by Drew Thomson in 2008 Single Mothers only relied on only one main principle: it wouldn’t have any members. For the most part – they have stayed true to that, and only that. Spanning a discography of genera morphing LP’s and a myriad of EP’s the only constant is that none of it sounds the same. Each album has different members, different song writers, different ideas. For a while there were even two versions of the band going at the same time, with completely different people. Through all this Thomson left the band and moved to Swastika, Ontario to be a gold prospector. Single Mothers continued without him. While Thomson was searching for gold in Northern Ontario Single Mothers released their first S/T EP, which they recorded before he left, with Jeremy Bolm’s (Touché Amoré) Secret Voice Records. The band with no members played a sting of shows with different singers before Thomson returned. That EP sent the band touring with Title Fight, Quick Sand, Touché Amore, The Bronx and many others. The first LP Negative Qualities was recorded twice, produced by Joby Ford (The Bronx) and came out in 2014 – 10 years ago, on XL Records imprint Hot Charity to critical acclaim and led to festival appearances like Pitchfork Fest, Redding & Leeds, Primavera Sound, Riot Fest and many others. Then, as Single Mothers were picking up speed, they fell apart and started over. Now, 10 years later – in celebration of the record that tried to kill them, they’re back to play it in full. “These are the best songs from the worst years of my life.” Thomson recounts, “and I wouldn’t have it any other way.” GummGumm is a hardcore punk band from Chattanooga, TN.
