THE DONUTS

The Donuts have trod the boards for 25 years, bringing their special blend of pub rock and Kpop to often unsuspecting or non-existent audiences.  They are delighted to wrap up their Pleasure of Seconds tour at Kung Fu Necktie where they actually released POS, an album called “strangely ingenious” by the Philadelphia Inquirer and featured on WPXN.  As you may recall, the Pleasure of Seconds is response of sort to Rockpile’s legendary Seconds of Pleasure lp.  In 2018, the Donuts performed that album in its entirety at KFN.  This led the ‘nuts – as their legion of fan calls them – to write answer songs to the Rockpile originals.  In addition to songs from POS, the Donuts will essay nuggets from their illustrious catalogue on Philadelphia’s Chapter 7 Records ™.

JOJO AND THE GREASE

For nearly a decade now, drummer Alec Meltzer, bassist Jared Styles, and singer/songwriter Joey Sweeney have been gathering in a wood-paneled South Philly garage in the back of a former funeral home. There’s a low-to-the-floor sink there where they used to tilt the gurneys and let the blood off the cadavers run down into the city water system. It’s in this place, with assorted friends, that they’ve crafted a growing body of work — an album, a Christmas record, and bunch of singles and EPs. Across them all, the spirit of that room — referred to as the Parlor or just as accurately, The Body Shop — fills their songs with the stories and the vibes that are also on the other side of that drain, coursing under the city streets. The band call themselves Jojo & The Grease because you’re not supposed to pour grease down the drain.

On their newest EP, The Stage, they select the best of the songs they’ve been working on the lately, along with a live cover of Lou Reed’s “Nobody But You” — captured during their recent residency at legacy Philly jazz haunt Ortlieb’s, just steps from where Sweeney was born and raised. These songs channel the Velvets, dark UK indie pop from the 80s, and blown-out 70s singer-songwriters, and they are all straight from the heart. Possibly the only band on earth that has opened for Big Thief and The Gin Blossoms, Jojo & The Grease can work a room, and take great joy in communing with the messy reality of the living.
