It was then in the spring of 2016 that a fuller version of the band was formed with keyboardist Brad Murray. The band began to really blossom with the addition of their long time musical confidant and lead guitarist, Aaron Michael Brown, of the band Saint Slumber. A fuller sound and visual aesthetic was needed and was finally resurrected when they asked art director and musician Dave Meyers to help make their vision come to life. Together Atlassian have been passionately working to create your favorite new songs, visually striking content, a memorable live show with healthy amounts of improvisation that not only solidifies the bands professional skills but prove that they are worthy of the praise they get. James Morozin (Lead Singer), Johnny Brennan (Bass), Matt Kelly (Guitar), Chuck Haegele (Guitar), and Bill Carley (Drums). The band started with two cousins Chuck and Johnny looking for other musicians to jam with, they found Matt on craigslist and Bill from an older band. This lineup stayed the same, but finding the right singer was the hard part. Until, James with no prior singing experience asked to step in and he was the guy for the job! They have since gained a small presence on social media with their “Lodi” cover by CCR on youtube, and from their first live show. They have a good setlist of original tunes and are headed to the studio in November to record their first ever EP. They enjoy playing and writing in the style of older, retro rock but like to put their own modern twist on their songs. With their late 90’s post-grunge arrangements built around Capolongo’s heartfelt lyrics and folk-pop inspired melodies, Chasing Straights showcases a unique sound capable of hooking fans of a wide variety of genres. Refusing to call playing music a career, the combo endures, at least in its own mind. Says chief songwriter Scott McCaughey: “We never broke up and we probably never will.”The Bret Tobias SetBret’s a Replacements-addled gen-x romantic still humming from the big bang of discovering MTV’s 120 Minutes in its prime (i.e. before Nirvana ruined everything). Imagine being 14 years old in Reagan’s America and hearing Sonic Youth’s “Expressway to yr Skull,” or Flesh For Lulu’s “Postcards from Paradise,” or the The Mighty Lemon Drops’ “Inside Out,” or The Wishniaks’ “Day to End All Days” or The House of Love’s “I Don’t Know Why I Love You,” or Scruffy The Cat’s “Mybabyshesalright” for the first time. Kaboom. Bret’s been striving to distill that spirit for longer than he cares to admit, initially via the punk trio Möped, and after via the wish-we-didn’t-have-to-refer-to-this-as-power-pop combo The Bigger Lovers. To be clear, this is no cheeky retro project: dude has fully digested his influences and is writing songs for the ages. Sure, a touch of folky maturity has crept in–I’m reminded of Nick Lowe who once wondered, “what do you do when you’re 30 and you’re still called Rat Scabies?”–but he ain’t boring. The Pleaser Vol. 1 EP was released in late 2023 to the acclaim of about 20 diehard Bigger Lovers fans (bless them). Pleaser Vol. 2 is due in 2024.
